Afghanistan Women to Play T20 Match in January

The Afghanistan women's cricket team will play a T20 match against Cricket Without Borders XI in Melbourne on January 30.

Background

The team is currently living under refuge in Australia after fleeing Afghanistan following the Taliban takeover in 2021. The Taliban has banned women from playing sports in Afghanistan.

Support for the Team

The Australian government and Cricket Australia have come together to provide support for the Afghan women's team. The Australian government has set up the opportunity for the team players to reside in Canberra and Melbourne.

Goals of the Refugee Team

The Afghanistan women's team's goals include developing and showcasing their talent, giving hope to women remaining in Afghanistan, and drawing attention to the challenges women face in Afghanistan. They aim to compete at the highest levels and recruit and train girls and women who love cricket.
