Naqvi silent on Pakistan's demand for a tri-series as CT25 impasse continues

Mohsin Naqvi avoided commenting on Pakistan's proposal for a tri-series involving India at a neutral venue. Speaking to reporters in Lahore on Saturday (December 7), the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman stated that he did not wish to jeopardise Pakistan's position in the ongoing Champions Trophy negotiations by discussing the matter.

"I prefer not to delve into specifics at this time, as preserving our position is critical. Pakistan is playing a constructive role in the process and will continue to do so," Naqvi said in Urdu when specifically asked whether the PCB requested for a tri-series involving India.

The PCB had proposed a tri-series at a neutral venue as a negotiating tool to help resolve the ongoing deadlock, but there were no takers for the idea. The Champions Trophy issue has emerged as a significant concern in world cricket, drawing widespread attention.

Naqvi met Pakistan's Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif on Sunday (December 8) morning, amid Champions Trophy discussions. The timing of this meeting is significant as the PCB has consistently maintained that it will consult with the government before agreeing to any settlement.

The ICC Board members appear to back a hybrid model, with the UAE being the potential venue for India's matches. However, the PCB has insisted that the same hybrid formula be applied when it is India's turn to host an ICC event. The discussions have seemingly reached a stalemate at this stage.

"At this stage, I cannot comment further. Once the ICC approves the decisions, we will provide all the details. Rest assured, we are doing our best to achieve an outcome that serves the best interests of Pakistan and international cricket. However, the final decision lies with the ICC."

Asked about Jay Shah, the new chairman of the ICC, Naqvi said the progress of world cricket will depend on the progress of the ICC. With less than 75 days left for the February 19-March 9 tournament, time is running out for the ICC and there is a need to break the deadlock immediately.
