BCCI in Need of New Treasurer as Ashish Shelar Set to Step Down

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will need a new treasurer as Ashish Shelar steps down due to his new role as a minister in the Maharashtra Cabinet.

Background

Ashish Shelar was sworn in as a minister on Sunday, making it untenable for him to continue as treasurer. According to the BCCI constitution, a person holding a ministerial position is disqualified from being an office-bearer.

BCCI Constitution

Article 4.5 of the BCCI constitution defines the qualifications for office-bearers, including a clause that disqualifies individuals holding ministerial positions.

Shelar's Tenure

Shelar has been the BCCI treasurer since September 2022 and was a close confidant of Jay Shah, who recently resigned as Independent Chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC).

Speculation and Denial

There was speculation that Shelar might take over as secretary, but he denied this, citing his primary focus on politics and inability to spare the necessary commitment to cricket.

Current Situation

Shelar's departure leaves the BCCI in need of a new treasurer. It remains to be seen whether the board will hold an election or if president Roger Binny will delegate responsibilities to another office-bearer.
