SA20 readies for third edition, set to be biggest league outside IPL

The SA20 is set to begin its third edition, aiming to be the biggest league outside of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The first game will be held on Thursday, featuring Sunrisers Eastern Cape and Mumbai Indians Cape Town at St George's Park in Gqeberha.

Graeme Smith, the league's commissioner, expressed a balance of excitement and fear, having worked hard to establish the league over the past two seasons. He feels that the SA20 has become an established product and one of the biggest leagues outside of the IPL.

The SA20 has attracted large crowds, eager to watch top international players compete in a high-level tournament without the pressure of national importance. The league's success can be attributed to the involvement of six franchises owned by IPL teams, playing in South Africa's well-known venues, and featuring the best local and international players.

Smith emphasized the SA20's difference from the UAE's ILT20, stating that the SA20 is a South African league focused on benefiting local players. In contrast, the ILT20 requires many international players and lacks investment in local cricket.

The SA20's ambition to be the IPL's biggest little brother has been boosted by the signing of Indian player Dinesh Karthik for Paarl Royals. Karthik's participation marks the first time an Indian player has joined a non-Indian franchise league, which Smith considers important for the league's global appeal.

The SA20's primary goal remains closing the gap between domestic cricket in South Africa and international standards. The league provides a platform for competitive cricket, top medical care, and good coaching, aiming to attract a global audience.

Cricket South Africa (CSA) is a majority shareholder in the SA20, working closely with the league to ensure scheduling and a positive relationship between the two organizations. Smith and CSA aim to revive cricket fans, bring new supporters to the stands, and provide a global platform for players.

Smith and SA20 Head of Cricket Stephen Cook are focused on maintaining the league's integrity and ensuring equally competitive teams, attracting top players and fans. Cook recalls the excitement of the first SA20 game, which drew large crowds and signaled a potential turnaround for cricket in South Africa.
