Chapman, Smith lead New Zealand's comfortable win

Mark Chapman scored a career-best 132 and Nathan Smith took four wickets as New Zealand beat Pakistan by 73 runs in the first ODI in Napier.

Chasing 345, Pakistan were 249/3 in the 39th over but collapsed, losing 7 for 22 to be bowled out for 271 in 44.1 overs.

Pakistan made a promising start with the ball, with Naseem Shah dismissing Will Young and Akif Javed taking two wickets. New Zealand then recovered with a 198-run stand between Chapman and Daryl Mitchell (76).

Chapman reached his century off 94 balls, while Mitchell played a supporting role. Irfan Khan dismissed both set batters in consecutive overs, but debutant Muhammad Abbas hit a fiery 52 off 26 balls to lift New Zealand past 340.

Pakistan's lack of a specialist spinner hurt them in the middle overs, conceding 118 runs in 10 overs. They also conceded 43 extras.

Pakistan's chase began well with an 83-run opening stand between Abdullah Shafique and Usman Khan. Mohammad Rizwan and Babar Azam added 76 for the third wicket.

Abbas dismissed Rizwan, and Salman Agha and Babar added 85 for the fifth wicket before Babar was out.

Jacob Duffy then took two wickets in an over, and Smith finished the innings, taking four wickets.
