GT clinch rain-hit thriller off last ball to go to the top
Gujarat Titans jumped to the top of the points table with a thrilling last-ball win against the Mumbai Indians. The six-match winning streak for Mumbai Indians in IPL 2025 came to an end.
Rain had a big say in the stop-start encounter, which saw numerous twists and turns before GT held their nerve to steal victory off the final ball of the innings.
Jasprit Bumrah was the man to turn it around for Mumbai Indians. On a pitch that appeared to have quickened with the moisture around, he first ripped one past Shubman Gill's defence and in his subsequent over had the better of Shahrukh Khan with a ripping incoming delivery.
He was ably supported at the other end by the left-arm seamers. Both Trent Boult, who skidded one onto Sherfane Rutherford's pads and Ashwani Kumar who yorked Rashid Khan, delivered timely blows that left GT four runs behind the par score.
When play resumed GT were left with 15 needed in one over. Deepak Chahar bowling the final over erred in lengths and overstepped once as GT pulled things back. But with one needed off two balls, he managed to bounce out Gerald Coetzee. The final ball saw a run-out chance missed and GT completing the single needed to take them over the line.
Powerplay – MI ride on good fortune
Phase Score – 56/2 (RR: 9.33 ; 4s/6s: 9/1 )
Three catches were dropped by Gujarat Titans inside the powerplay which enabled Mumbai Indians to get to a decent start. Will Jacks and Suryakumar Yadav were both dropped once each and to their credit they managed to keep the scoring-rate up. Yadav greeted Prasidh Krishna with two crisp drives straight down but was put down by Sai Kishore in the same over. In the following over, the aggressive Jacks was put down by Mohammad Siraj at midwicket, denying Arshad Khan a second wicket. Khan had earlier managed to see the back of Rohit Sharma who miscued an attempted big hit soon after Siraj had got rid of the other opener Ryan Rickelton.
Middle Overs – Gujarat pull things back
Phase Score – 59/4 (RR: 6.55; 4s/6s: 2/2 )
Gujarat's strikes through their spinners helped them bounce back in the game. And this time they also took the catches that were on offer. Jacks and Yadav had set up well to give Mumbai a solid platform and had threatened to make it bigger initially. Jacks raced to his first fifty with the Mumbai Indians, and his 71-run stand with Yadav had set the innings up for a strong upsurge. But against the run of play, Yadav fell chipping a catch off Sai Kishore after getting a quick 35. An over later, Rashid Khan struck having Jacks caught on the sweep for 53. These strikes pressed the lid on the scoring-rate of Mumbai Indians. Tilak Varma and Hardik Pandya too were prised out in successive overs. In the space of 19 balls, MI lost four wickets for just 16 runs and turned the innings on its head.
Death Overs – MI kept down to 155
Phase Score – 40/2 (RR: 8.0; 4s/6s: 3/2 )
A few timely hits from Corbin Bosch gave MI some much-needed fillip towards the end. But those blows alone were not enough to undo the mistakes of the past. Gujarat Titans managed to restrict them to a below-par total after putting them in to bat. The bowling was a collective effort from Gujarat Titans with each of their six bowlers being amongs the wickets and contributing at crucial times.
Powerplay – MI keep GT in check
Phase Score – 29/1 (RR: 4.83 ; 4s/6s: 2/1)
Trent Boult broke one of the most consistent opening pairs in the tournament when he had Sai Sudharsan nicking behind in the second over. With movement on offer, MI's bowlers were able to keep GT's top-order quiet even inside the powerplay. Adding to the drama was the drizzle around that enabled MI to slow things down deliberately. GT had just 29 on board inside the powerplay when MI opted for a Strategic Timeout in the hope that DLS equations could favour them.
Middle Overs – GT bounce back strongly
Phase Score – 84/2 (RR: 9.33 ; 4s/6s: 6/3)
Jos Buttler and Shubman Gill helped resurrect the Titans with yet another handy partnership. The duo found timely boundaries as they put on a 72-run stand that kept Gujarat steadily abreast of the asking-rate. With some rain around, the DLS score was a key factor at play. But even as the rain relented during this partnership, Gujarat began to get ahead steadily. However, the dismissal of Buttler gave MI hope once again. Bosch had been subbed out due to a concussion and his replacement Ashwani Kumar provided MI with the timely dismissal of Buttler. At this stage GT were not ahead of the DLS par score. But Sherfane Rutherford hit a timely cameo, first laying into the offspin of Will Jacks. An over later where Rutherford hit another six, the Titans were seven runs ahead of the DLS par score before rain forced a 25-minute halt of play. GT were left needing 49 in the last six overs when play resumed.
Death Overs – Rain, drama and twists
Phase Score – 34/3 (RR: 8.5 ; 4s/6s: 3/1)
With Jasprit Bumrah bringing about a masterclass, GT's fortunes took a downturn swiftly. But the dramatic rain interruptions kept swinging the game one way and another before GT made sure that they held their nerve when it mattered. Rahul Tewatia's boundary off the first ball of the final over and a six by Coetzee significantly tilted the balance.
Brief Scores: Mumbai Indians 155/8 in 20 overs (Will Jacks 53, Suryakumar Yadav 35; Sai Kishore 2-34) lost to Gujarat Titans 147/7 in 19 overs (Shubman Gill 43, Jos Buttler 30; Jasprit Bumrah 2-19) by 3 wickets (DLS method).
Mumbai Indians have a four-day gap before they go to Dharamsala to take on Punjab Kings on May 11 while Gujarat Titans take on the Delhi Capitals on the same day in Delhi.
