Behind PSL's failed relocation to UAE, quiet cricket diplomacy at play

Cricket diplomacy appears to be quietly playing its part amidst the ongoing military conflict between India and Pakistan. The Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) has declined the Pakistan Cricket Board's (PCB) request to host the relocated Pakistan Super League (PSL) matches, following a nudge from Indian cricket administrators.

ECB's decision aligns with Indian cricket administrators' stance

The ECB's decision is understood to have been influenced by the standing of Jay Shah, former BCCI secretary and current ICC Chair, and his known ties with the UAE's leadership and cricket board.

Cordial relations between BCCI and ECB

The BCCI and ECB have maintained cordial relations, particularly after the BCCI, under Shah, staged one and a half IPL seasons in the UAE and organized the 2021 T20 World Cup there.

Pakistan Board's failed attempt to host PSL in Dubai

The Pakistan Board wanted to host its remaining eight PSL games in Dubai, but had to do a volte face hours later stating that the league was being postponed. Foreign players participating in the PSL were not willing to continue, citing concerns for their mental well-being and the sentiments of their families.

Future of PSL remains uncertain

With tensions between India and Pakistan continuing, the future of the PSL remains uncertain.
