Roston Chase Named West Indies Test Captain
Roston Chase has been appointed the new Test captain of the West Indies men's team, succeeding Kraigg Brathwaite who resigned in March. Chase, 33, will lead the team in the upcoming Test series against Australia at home, which will also be the first rubber in the new World Test Championship cycle.
Leadership Selection Process
The selection process was guided by a "data-informed, multi-dimensional framework" and involved a shortlist of John Campbell, Tevin Imlach, Joshua Da Silva, and Justin Greaves. Shai Hope, the current ODI and T20I captain, declined consideration to focus on his existing leadership roles.
Interview Panel and Reaction
The interview panel consisted of Daren Sammy (head coach), Miles Bascombe (Director of Cricket), and Enoch Lewis (Chairman of the Cricket Strategy and Officiating Committee). CWI President Dr. Kishore Shallow praised the selection process, saying it sets a new benchmark for leadership appointments in West Indies cricket.
Daren Sammy, head coach, urged fans to get behind their new captain, saying Chase has earned the respect of his peers, understands the responsibility of the role, and has shown leadership qualities.
Chase's Cricketing Record
Chase has played 49 Tests, scoring 2265 runs at an average of 26.33, including five hundreds. He also has 85 wickets, with his best figures being 8 for 60 against England in Bridgetown 2019.
