CSK's Disappointing 2025 Season: Fleming Looks Ahead to Next Year
Chennai Super Kings' head coach Stephen Fleming has acknowledged the team's disappointing 2025 season, saying it's "probably fitting" that they're at the bottom of the points table. Despite being eliminated from the playoffs, CSK has been using the remaining games to blood young players and look ahead to next season.
"We've played that type of cricket, so you can't hide away from it. But what we do want to do is just put a much better performance on the paddock that reflects the ability of the team," Fleming said.
CSK's biggest problem this year has been their batting, with a lack of intent and a general lack of runs across all phases. The team has also struggled with their batting order, with players like Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin being used in unfamiliar roles.
"Yeah, our order is not right at this stage, and that is something that we are always looking to rejig. We've got some strong ideas for next year, so that all facets are covered," Fleming said.
The team has also had issues with their bowling, with Matheesha Pathirana enduring a forgettable season. However, Fleming chose not to be too critical of the Sri Lankan bowler, saying he's "coming back into some form" and needs to "get some form and get some confidence".
One bright spot for CSK has been the emergence of young pacer Anshul Kamboj, who has impressed with his new-ball bursts and ability to rush batters. Kamboj has also made rapid strides in red-ball cricket, taking all ten wickets in an innings during the 2024 Ranji season.
"Kamboj is good. His speeds have been around 138, 139 (kph). He is deceptive and the ball always seems to hit the gloves harder. His big strength is his length and he just gets the ball to wobble," Fleming said.
