South Africa Ends 27-Year ICC Trophy Drought with Markram's 136
Aiden Markram's impressive 136 helped South Africa break a 27-year drought in ICC trophies, defeating Australia by five wickets in the World Test Championship Final at Lord's on June 14.
Markram's cautious approach, despite losing two partners, ensured South Africa's steady progress towards the finish line. The Australian pace trio picked up a wicket each, but couldn't delay the inevitable in the 15-minute extended morning session.
Australian captain Pat Cummins got the early breakthrough, dismissing Temba Bavuma for 66. Bavuma, however, received a standing ovation from the Lord's crowd for his brave fight despite a hamstring niggle.
The match-winning partnership was broken at 147, and Australia wasted both their remaining reviews in quick succession. Markram raised South Africa's 250 in the following over, before David Bedingham brought the requirement down to sub-20 with a glorious straight drive.
Markram fell off the final delivery of the over, but not before being congratulated by the Australians and receiving a standing ovation from the crowd. The last six runs were secured with every minute of the extended time allowance and some late drama.
Brief Scores:
Australia 212 & 206 lost to South Africa 138 & 282/5 by 5 wickets.
