Australia Announces Changes to Squad for WI vs AUS 1st Test
Marnus Labuschagne Dropped, Steve Smith Out with Injury
Cricket Australia has confirmed that Marnus Labuschagne has been dropped for the opening Test against West Indies in Barbados, starting June 25. Labuschagne will be replaced by Sam Konstas in the XI.
Reason for Labuschagne's Omission
Labuschagne has struggled in Test cricket, averaging only 34.91 in 2023 and 30.93 in 2024. His recent performances, including twin failures in the WTC Final, have been a concern.
Steve Smith Out with Finger Injury
Steve Smith will also miss the Test after dislocating his finger during the WTC Final. He has avoided surgery but will wear a splint for eight weeks.
Replacement Players
Sam Konstas and Josh Inglis will replace Labuschagne and Smith in the XI. Konstas impressed on debut against India last year, while Inglis made a century in his first Test in Sri Lanka earlier this year.
Selection Chair's Comments
Selection chair George Bailey said, "Marnus at his best can be a really important member of this team. We will continue working with him on the areas of his game we feel he needs to rediscover."
