Bat, ball and the balance beam: How do India re-align after Leeds?
India's defeat in the series opener may reopen the debate about Nitish Kumar Reddy's role in the team. Reddy, who has been working with bowling coach Morne Morkel, may offer a stronger batting option at No. 8, but his inclusion would raise questions about his ability to take 20 wickets.
Morkel has been challenging Reddy to improve his bowling, suggesting that he needs to work on his alignments and consistency. Reddy has been putting in the effort, bowling extensively in the nets and receiving tips from Morkel.
However, Reddy's inclusion would mean that India would have to sacrifice a specialist bowler, which could be a trade-off they are not willing to make. Former cricketer Gautam Gambhir believes that the topmost priority is to take 20 wickets, and that Reddy's presence may not necessarily guarantee that.
Gambhir suggests that India may see Reddy more as a specialist batter, especially after his impressive performance in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. However, Reddy may struggle to make an impact against England's aggressive lineup on flat surfaces.
A bolder option for India might be to play an attacking spinner like Kuldeep Yadav or an additional seamer like Akash Deep, depending on the nature of the pitch. This would put the onus on the frontline batters to deliver.
India will have a day off on Thursday after reaching Birmingham on Wednesday, before resuming training on Friday. They may also make adjustments to their squad before the second Test begins on July 2.
