Woakes Frustrated with Umpiring Decisions
Chris Woakes expressed frustration with the umpiring decisions on the first morning of the Test match at Edgbaston. He felt that two decisions went against him, which could have changed the course of the game.
Woakes believed he had claimed his second wicket of the game when a nip-backer hit Karun Nair's backpad, but the third umpire's decision went against him. He also felt that a similar decision against Yashasvi Jaiswal should have gone in his favour.
"We could have easily had them 30 for 3," Woakes said. "It was a pretty frustrating morning, really. Obviously emotions run high when you are desperate to do well for the team, do well for yourself and it would've been nice… had those decisions gone our way, the day looks completely different, but that is Test cricket and we move on."
Despite the frustrations, Woakes enjoyed a successful opening day's play, finishing with figures of 2-59 in 21 overs. He also praised the DRS system, saying it has been good for the game, but suggested that if a batsman decides to leave the ball and it's still hitting the stumps, it should be out.
Woakes also spoke about his ploy to bowl from wide of the crease, which worked against Nitish Reddy, and his love for playing at his home venue, Edgbaston.
