Is time running out for Mustafizur in ODIs?
The question on everyone's mind is whether Mustafizur's magic has returned in ODIs. His recent performance in the second ODI against Sri Lanka, where he took the wicket of Janith Liyanage, has sparked debate. However, his ordinary outing in the next game raises concerns about his form.
Statistics show that his economy rate has been declining compared to other fast bowlers in Bangladesh since the 2023 World Cup. Mustafizur has played 19 ODIs, taking 19 wickets with an economy rate of 5.69, while Taskin Ahmed and Shoriful Islam have picked up 27 and 23 wickets respectively.
Mustafizur's performance in different phases of the game is also a concern. He has taken 4 wickets at an economy rate of 5.45 in the first 10 overs, 11 wickets with an economy rate of 5.39 in the middle overs, and only 4 wickets in the death overs at an economy rate of 7.05.
Game development coach Mahbub Ali Zaki believes that Mustafizur lacks pace and swing, relying heavily on cutters, which is not effective in ODIs. He suggests that the left-arm pacer is not skilled enough for ODIs and needs to work on his fitness level to bowl 10 overs.
Zaki also thinks that it's high time Bangladesh gives opportunities to other bowlers, such as Shoriful Islam, who can learn from experience even if they concede more runs. He believes that Mustafizur should be benched and only play T20s, as his fitness level is not up to the mark for ODIs.
The question remains whether the Bangladesh team management will continue to back Mustafizur in the ODI format unless he improves his skillset and fitness level.
