Bumrah's Five-Fer Sees England Bowled Out for 387
Jasprit Bumrah picked up his 13th five-fer in away Tests, the most by an Indian bowler, as England were bowled out for 387 in their first innings at Lord's on Day 2.
Fifties from Brydon Carse and Jamie Smith helped England post a respectable total. Jofra Archer, on his return to Test cricket after four years, saw the back of Yashasvi Jaiswal in his first over. KL Rahul and Karun Nair then took India to Tea at 44 for 1.
England's First Innings
England's eighth-wicket stand between Smith and Carse frustrated India, before Mohammed Siraj got one to nip away, ending the 84-run partnership. Carse upped the ante with a couple of boundaries off Bumrah, while Siraj troubled Archer against both edges of the bat. Bumrah picked up his fifth of the innings by castling Archer, his first five-fer at Lord's.
Carse was dropped twice in an over, but was eventually bowled off a yorker to end the innings at 387.
India's Reply
In reply, Chris Woakes offered some looseners in his first over, and Jaiswal kindly obliged with three boundaries. Archer, however, wasted no time, removing the southpaw off the third ball in his first over. Nair endured a testing phase of play against a red-hot Archer, being beaten on the outside edge and surviving against some snorters.
Rahul looked more comfortable, gently tapping the ball on the offside and taking singles to keep the scoreboard moving, taking India to Tea further unscathed.
Earlier in the Day
England fought back spiritedly, with Joe Root bringing up his eighth ton at Lord's. Bumrah then tore through the English batting order, taking the wickets of Ben Stokes, Root, and Woakes within two of his overs. Smith was dropped off a regulation chance by Rahul in the slips, and the wicketkeeper-batter made the most of his reprieve.
Smith and Carse had the runs flowing quickly, barely offering a chance to India, having battled through a testing period of play.
