South Africa brace for tough challenger in full-strength New Zealand

Rob Walter, who coached South Africa's white-ball team from 2021 to March 2025, will face his former side as New Zealand's all-format coach. Walter took over the role in June after Gary Stead stepped down.

This will be Walter's first T20I assignment as New Zealand coach. His squad includes returning players like captain Mitchell Santner. New Zealand are considered favorites to win the tri-series.

South Africa, fresh off their World Test Championship final victory at Lord's and a series win against Zimbabwe, are looking strong. They won their tri-series opener against Zimbabwe by five wickets.

Despite a depleted squad, South Africa bowled economically, with only Simelane and Corbin Bosch conceding over 8 runs per over. The middle-order trio of Rubin Hermann, Dewald Brevis, and Bosch batted well against Zimbabwe.

South Africa will face a tougher challenge against New Zealand on Wednesday (July 16).

When: South Africa vs New Zealand; July 16, 2025; 1pm Local Time (11am GMT, 4.30pm IST)

Where: Harare Sports Club

What to expect: The pitch is expected to be good for batting, but new-ball bowlers will have a role to play. No rain is expected.

South Africa: Gerald Coetzee is likely to play, given his recent injury concerns. Nandre Burger, also returning from injury, could be dropped.

Probable XI: Lhuan-dre Pretorius, Reeza Hendricks, Rassie van der Dussen (capt), Rubin Hermann, Dewald Brevis, Corbin Bosch, George Linde, Andile Simelane, Gerald Coetzee, Nqaba Peter, Lungi Ngidi

New Zealand: Mitchell Santner, Rachin Ravindra, and Devon Conway could return after missing the previous T20I series against Pakistan.

Probable XI: Tim Seifert, Devon Conway, Mark Chapman, Rachin Ravindra, Glenn Phillips, Daryl Mitchell, Michael Bracewell, Mitchell Santner (C), Adam Milne, Matt Henry, William O'Rourke

"If you look at our squad there are a lot of new faces. It's probably not our A side, or the proper Proteas side. Most of the guys are having a well deserved rest after the WTC final. There are a lot of guys who want to do well and make their mark in the side." – George Linde
