Moroney Suits South African Cricket, Not CSA's Board
Patrick Moroney's appointment as convenor selector for the Proteas men's team is a welcome development, despite the CSA board's regressive approach. Moroney's experience in talent identification and selection, combined with his understanding of the game, makes him an ideal candidate for the job.
Moroney will report to Enoch Nkwe, director of national teams and high performance, and work closely with the head coach. This is a relief, as Nkwe's meticulous work has contributed significantly to South Africa's success. Moroney has also come through the structures, having worked on talent identification programs and served as convenor of selectors for the Lions and CSA's academy, emerging, and under-19 teams.
The appointment of Moroney is a departure from the previous approach, where head coaches picked teams without input from selectors. This change is a step in the right direction, as seen in South Africa's success in the WTC campaign, where Conrad played a key role in selecting the team.
However, the appointment of an independent selector to form a three-person panel with Moroney and Conrad raises concerns about the board's ability to get it right. Despite this, Moroney's appointment is a positive development, and he is not among the CSA board members who are responsible for the decline of South African cricket.
