Manchester Originals to be Renamed Manchester Super Giants from 2026
The Manchester Originals franchise in The Hundred will be renamed to Manchester Super Giants from 2026, according to sources close to the matter.
Sanjiv Goenka, owner of the Lucknow Super Giants and Durban Super Giants, acquired a 107 million GBP stake in the franchise in February this year. The team's color scheme may change from black to blue, but this has not been confirmed.
The ECB privatized The Hundred last year, attracting external investment to capitalize on the competition's interest. The Manchester-based franchise was acquired by the RPSG Group, owned by Goenka, who reportedly outbid two unnamed IPL franchises.
Goenka also owns Mohun Bagan FC, an Indian football team based in Kolkata.
The Manchester Originals men's squad features Jos Buttler, Phil Salt, Heinrich Klaasen, and James Anderson. The women's team includes Sophie Ecclestone, Beth Mooney, Amelia Kerr, and Deandra Dottin.
The men's team finished runners-up in 2022 and 2023, while the women's team has not entered the playoffs in the tournament's history.
Goenka expressed his commitment to developing a deep bond with the players, support team, and community, and believes in delivering good quality cricket for generations to come.
Manchester Originals Chair James Sheridan stated that partnering with RPSG Group will allow them to compete at a higher level, inspired by the IPL and other major sports.
"We want to offer our fans an experience never before seen in English cricket," Sheridan said. "We will bring the world's top cricket stars to Manchester every August and provide sporting entertainment of the highest level to the people of Manchester and the wider North West."
