Mind the gap: Deciding Test misses bright, but bruised stars
The first edition of the Anderson-Tendulkar series is set to conclude at The Oval, with a trail of weary bodies and missing stars. Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer are confirmed absentees, while Jasprit Bumrah's participation is uncertain.
Stokes' absence is a result of his brutal workload, which has seen him bowl 140 overs across four Tests, picking up 17 wickets at 25.23. He has been a case study in workload management, but even if the gap between matches had been longer, he may not have made it.
Stokes has questioned the schedule, suggesting that the gaps between games could be done better. He believes that consistency in breaks between games could help reduce the toll on players.
Bumrah, meanwhile, has bowled 119.4 overs across three Tests this series, and his participation is uncertain. India's pace spearhead had a quiet clause in his contract, stating he would play no more than three Tests.
Shubman Gill, India's batsman, expressed sympathy for Stokes' absence, acknowledging that England would feel the loss deeply. However, he also emphasized the importance of his own team's bowlers, who have laboured through nearly 160 overs in Manchester.
Gill pointed out that the series' intensity has been a major factor in the fatigue and frustration felt by both teams. Each of the four Tests has gone the distance, with 59 out of 60 sessions played.
