Bairstow's Assault in Vain as London Spirit Open Account
London Spirit finally opened their account in the Men's Hundred with a tight 8-run win over Welsh Fire on Saturday (August 9). The team's batting performance was a remarkable turnaround, led by David Warner's unbeaten 70.
Warner got off to a good start, but Kane Williamson struggled at the other end. Warner and Jamie Smith then combined to take down Chris Green, hammering him for three sixes. The innings received a boost when Smith took on Josh Hull for a big hit, followed by a four before being dismissed.
Ashton Turner then chipped in with a useful cameo, and Warner continued to push the score beyond 160. Welsh Fire's chase was led by Jonny Bairstow, who remained unbeaten on 86*. However, the team's middle order caved in, and they were reduced to 39/5.
Despite this, Bairstow led the revival alongside Chris Green, finding the boundaries at regular intervals. When 31 runs were needed off 10, Bairstow smashed Jamie Overton for back-to-back sixes, bringing the target down to 19 off 8. However, Overton and Luke Wood ensured only one six was hit from the remaining deliveries, denying Welsh Fire their first points of the season.
Brief scores:
London Spirit 163/5 in 100 balls (David Warner 70*, Jamie Smith 26; Josh Hull 2/36) beat Welsh Fire 155/6 in 100 balls (Jonny Bairstow 86*; Daniel Worrall 2/31) by 8 runs.
