Gill, Siraj Face Uncertain Futures in Asia Cup Squad
The Indian selectors are set to meet in Mumbai on August 19 to finalize the squad for the Asia Cup, and some of the standout performers from the England tour may not make the cut. Shubman Gill, who scored over 750 runs in the England tour, and Mohammed Siraj, the highest wicket-taker in the series, are likely to miss out.
Gill's impressive aggregate in five-day games may not be enough to secure a spot in the T20I championship, as the selectors are expected to stick with the current opening pair of Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson. Yashasvi Jaiswal is a strong contender for the third opener's spot, and it's possible that neither Gill nor Jaiswal is selected.
The other batters in the squad are likely to be Tilak Varma, Suryakumar Yadav, and Rinku Singh, with one more batting slot still to be decided. Shivam Dube and Washington Sundar are contenders, but Shreyas Iyer may not be as fortunate. Jitesh Sharma is expected to claim the second wicketkeeper's spot.
Siraj, who was the toast of the nation after his spirited performance in the England tour, may struggle to find a place in the squad, as Jasprit Bumrah will lead the attack. Spots are expected for Arshdeep Singh and one (or both) of Prasidh Krishna and Harshit Rana. Hardik Pandya will be the other pacer in the squad.
The designated spinners are likely to be Kuldeep Yadav, Varun Chakaravarthy, Ravi Bishnoi, and Axar Patel, with Washington Sundar's place in the squad not guaranteed.
