Quinton de Kock Returns to South Africa Squad
Quinton de Kock is back in the South African cricket team. After last playing for his country in June 2023, he has been named in the squads for seven white-ball games against Namibia and Pakistan from October 11 to November 8.
De Kock retired from Test cricket in December 2021 following the first match against India. He stepped away from ODIs after South Africa's World Cup semifinal loss to Australia in November 2023. However, he didn't make a similar announcement after the T20 World Cup final in June 2024, his last international appearance.
Since then, De Kock has focused on family, fishing, and playing in various franchise tournaments around the world, including for Seattle Orcas, Barbados Royals, Durban's Super Giants, Kolkata Knight Riders, and Mumbai Indians New York.
His international status remained unclear until a conversation with South Africa's white-ball coach, Shukri Conrad, in the early hours of the morning during the team's tour of Australia last month.
"He said to me, 'I think I've still got a lot to offer. I miss playing for South Africa. I want to play for the Proteas. I think I can make a difference,'" Conrad said.
Conrad emphasized De Kock's commitment and experience, stating that he is a "talisman" for the team.
De Kock's return comes ahead of the T20 World Cup in Sri Lanka and India in February and March. While Conrad acknowledged De Kock's potential to be a key player in the tournament, he stressed that selection would be based on form and fitness.
De Kock's return is significant, considering his impressive record as one of South Africa's most successful batsmen across all formats. He is behind only Faf du Plessis and Temba Bavuma among active players on the list of South Africa's top Test runscorers. He also holds the record for most ODI runs for South Africa.
Conrad highlighted De Kock's experience and leadership qualities, stating that he will be a valuable asset to the younger players in the squad.
