CSK confirm Dhoni will play IPL 2026
MS Dhoni is set to feature in the next season of the IPL for Chennai Super Kings (CSK), with confirmation from the franchise itself. CEO Kasi Viswanathan told Cricbuzz, "that's right," while also noting that trade talks involving Sanju Samson are back on the table.
Viswanathan, who has been with CSK since its inception in 2008, recently informed a young fan about Dhoni's availability and reiterated to this website, "MS has told us that he will be available for the next season."
Dhoni's participation has been a recurring question in recent years, but this confirmation should end speculation for the 2026 edition. Last season, CSK finished at the bottom, with Dhoni leading the side in the absence of regular skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad.
Dhoni has been with CSK for all but two seasons during the franchise's suspension. If he plays next season, it will be his 17th for CSK and 19th overall in the IPL. He has featured in 248 matches for the team, scoring 4,865 runs and leading them to five titles (2010, 2011, 2018, 2021, 2023).
Sanju trade talks back on CSK table
Dhoni is involved in planning for next season and is expected to consult with key personnel, including Viswanathan, skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad, and coach Stephen Fleming ahead of the November 15 retention deadline. A meeting is likely on November 10–11, when final decisions will be made, including on the Samson trade possibility.
Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals have re-established contact over a potential trade involving Samson, and a top CSK player may be included in the deal. RR owner Manoj Badale is weighing options and has opened communication with several franchises, including Lucknow Super Giants, Kolkata Knight Riders, and Delhi Capitals, besides CSK.
A top CSK player is believed to be part of the discussions, and the player has been approached to assess comfort with a move to Rajasthan Royals. The situation is expected to become clearer in the coming days.
