Bumrah's blitz sees India dominate Day 1 at Eden Gardens
India selected four spinners for this Kolkata Test, their first such selection since 2012. Yet it was Jasprit Bumrah who delivered a sensational performance, taking 5 for 27 to bowl South Africa out for 159 on an 11-wicket opening day at Eden Gardens.
The day began with South Africa winning the toss and their openers putting up 57 runs quickly. Mohammed Siraj struggled with the new ball, conceding 25 runs in three overs before being withdrawn. Bumrah, however, was in top form, generating movement and beating batsmen consistently.
Bumrah's breakthrough came after 33 balls when he dismissed Ryan Rickelton with a delivery that straightened and clipped the top of off stump. Soon after, he forced Aiden Markram to fend a catch to Rishabh Pant.

After lunch, Bumrah returned to breach Tony de Zorzi's defence with a low, straight delivery. Siraj, bowling from Bumrah's end, found rhythm and dismissed Kyle Verreynne lbw and Marco Jansen bowled in the same over.
Axar Patel, expensive initially, found his line and removed Corbin Bosch just before Tea. South Africa lost all their reviews and appeared rattled as India's bowlers targeted the stumps.
In the evening session, Bumrah sealed the innings with two wickets in an over, bowling Simon Harmer and trapping Keshav Maharaj lbw with a yorker. Tristan Stubbs remained unbeaten but ran out of partners.
India's batting start was shaky. Yashasvi Jaiswal chopped onto his stumps off Jansen in the seventh over. KL Rahul and Washington Sundar then adopted a cautious approach, with India ending the day at 37/1. The run rate was slow at 1.85, but survival was the priority.
Fading light ended play after 75 overs, with India trailing by 122 runs heading into Day 2.
