Shubman Gill hospitalised, to play no further part in Kolkata Test
India will be a batter short in the fourth innings of the first Test against South Africa as Shubman Gill has been ruled out of any further participation due to a neck spasm he suffered on the previous day. The BCCI confirmed that he was taken to hospital for examination after the end of play on Saturday.
On Day 2, Gill walked out to bat after Washington Sundar was dismissed. Facing South Africa off-spinner Simon Harmer, he slog swept a delivery for four but immediately showed signs of pain and discomfort, clutching the back of his neck. The team physio attended to him, and after a brief check, Gill retired hurt as his head movement was restricted by the spasm.
India lost their remaining seven wickets, and Gill was unable to return as the innings ended at 189/9. He was subsequently ruled out of taking the field on Day 3.
The BCCI has stated that Gill remains under observation in hospital. His availability for the second Test, starting in six days in Guwahati, is yet to be confirmed.
