Hope, Greaves drag Christchurch Test to Day 5
Shai Hope slammed an unbeaten century while Justin Greaves scored 55 as the West Indies pair added 140 runs over more than a session and a half on Day 4 in Christchurch. This was a riposte to New Zealand's massive second innings total of 466 and subsequent declaration, leaving West Indies to chase 531. From 72 for 4 in the middle session, Hope and Greaves showed fight, taking the team to Stumps at 212 for 4, trailing by 319 runs.
New Zealand, resuming at 417 for 4, batted just 14 more overs to add 49 runs before declaring. Kemar Roach completed a five-wicket haul. West Indies openers John Campbell and Tagenarine Chanderpaul saw out 11 overs until Lunch, but New Zealand found breakthroughs in the second session.
In the second over after Lunch, Jacob Duffy removed Campbell, caught at first slip. In his next over, Duffy dismissed Chanderpaul, caught by the wicketkeeper. Alick Athanaze and Hope resisted for nearly 10 overs before Athanaze fell to a long-hop from Michael Bracewell. Henry then dismissed Roston Chase for the second time in the Test with a full nipbacker.
From 72 for 4, Hope and Greaves dug in. Hope cut and pulled Bracewell, while Greaves drove and punched against Henry. Hope reached his fifty before Tea and launched Bracewell for a six over long-on. New Zealand entered the final session a bowler short as Henry went for scans on his calf. Hope brought up his century off 139 balls, and the pair's 100-run stand, just before drinks. Greaves reached his half-century later.
By Stumps, West Indies had shown improvement from their first innings. After being bowled out in 75.4 overs initially, they reached 212 for 4 in 74 overs. The final hurdle is the remaining three sessions on Day 5.
