Wolvaardt, Luus crush Ireland in series opener
Laura Wolvaardt's second T20I century powered South Africa to a massive 105-run win over Ireland in the first T20I at Cape Town. Sune Luus also starred in an all-round capacity, scoring 81 with the bat and taking four wickets, as Ireland were bowled out for 115 chasing 221.
Opting to bat first, South Africa lost Faye Tunnicliffe early, but Sune Luus and Laura Wolvaardt then put on a 176-run partnership to dominate the Irish bowlers. Luus fell in the 18th over, but Wolvaardt carried on to reach her century as South Africa posted 220/2. Dane van Niekerk, on her comeback, added an unbeaten 21 from 8 balls.
In reply, Ireland were rocked early as Sune Luus removed both Amy Hunter and Orla Prendergast in the first over. Leah Paul built partnerships of 42 with Gaby Lewis and 31 with Laura Delany, but South Africa broke through consistently. Ireland were eventually bowled out for 115 in 18 overs, giving the hosts a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
