Hardik Pandya Unleashes A-Game in Dominant T20I Return
It was a Tuesday, and by Hardik Pandya's standards, just another Tuesday. On a challenging pitch offering steep bounce and seam movement, Pandya played a spellbinding innings. While other batters struggled, he scored an unbeaten 59 off just 28 balls, striking at 210 with six fours and four sixes.
Ravi Shastri summed it up: "Back in the side and back with a bang." Pandya's explosive knock propelled India to a 101-run victory over South Africa in the first T20I at Barabati Stadium. On a difficult new red-soil strip, he batted as if it were a flat track. The second-highest individual score in the match was less than half of his 59.
His innings was precisely what India had missed during his two-month absence due to a quadriceps injury. "At 48 for 3, and then from there getting to 175… the way Hardik batted," said captain Suryakumar Yadav. "We thought we'd get to 160, but 175 was unbelievable." South Africa were bowled out for 74 in 12.3 overs.
South Africa's batting coach, Ashwell Prince, analyzed Pandya's approach: "He's a six-hitter but also calm. Identifying the right balls to attack comes with experience. There's clarity in his thinking and execution. It was an outstanding innings."
Pandya launched his assault with two sixes off Keshav Maharaj in three deliveries. He was equally brutal against pacers Anrich Nortje and Lutho Sipamla. Notably, he displayed an expanded repertoire with powerful off-side strokes, including two flat-batted hits over mid-off and a striking upper cut off Nortje to bring up his fifty.
"I had to back my shots," Pandya said. "The wicket had a bit of spice. You had to be gutsy, and it was more about timing the ball. I was very satisfied." He was the obvious Player of the Match.
He also highlighted his focused rehabilitation at the NCA in Bengaluru: "These last 50 days, being away from your loved ones, making sure everything is covered. It's very satisfying when you come here and the results follow."
After his batting, he bowled two overs of medium pace, claiming the key wicket of David Miller, showcasing his all-round value.
Former India coach Sanjay Bangar explained his unique worth: "He can command a spot in the top five on his batting alone. He could also be one of the top three seamers in any team. There is no other player like Hardik Pandya in the Indian team."
It was the kind of performance only he could deliver, and India will need him in this rhythm with the World Cup approaching.
