Bairstow, bowlers help MI Emirates prevail in low-scoring thriller
MI Emirates overcame Dubai Capitals by seven runs in a low-scoring thriller in Dubai, keeping the ILT20 playoffs race intense. Jonny Bairstow's 67 guided MIE to 137, while Rashid Khan, Romario Shepherd, and Naveen-ul-Haq each took two wickets to restrict the Capitals to 130.
Bairstow started aggressively, hitting two boundaries off Mustafizur Rahman in the second over. Muhammad Waseem added two fours off David Willey before being dropped by Mohammad Nabi. The openers took MIE to 40/0 in the PowerPlay.
Waseem fell soon after, but Bairstow thrived against spin, smashing Nabi for two sixes and a four in the 11th over to reach his fifty. Nicholas Pooran fell for eight, Bairstow followed, and Kieron Pollard departed as MIE stumbled. Mustafizur struck three times in the 18th over with slower balls, before Romario Shepherd's late hits lifted MIE to 137/8.
For the Capitals, Shayan Jahangir hit sixes in the PowerPlay, but Leus de Plooy fell early. Jordan Cox's three fours helped them reach 51/1 after six overs. Afghan spinners AM Ghazanfar and Rashid Khan then tightened the grip, leading to Jahangir's stumping off Rashid. Cox broke the shackles with a six, keeping the game balanced.
Rashid bowled Rovman Powell in the 13th over, Kamindu Mendis removed Dasun Shanaka, and James Neesham was run-out as the Capitals lost three quick wickets. Cox and Nabi revived hopes with a 23-run stand, but Naveen dismissed both in the 19th over. Needing 16 off the final over, Shepherd removed Haider Ali and David Willey, with Mustafizur run-out, sealing MIE's narrow win.
