All-round Ferreira stars in Joburg Super Kings' Super Over win
The SA20 season saw its first-ever Super Over as Joburg Super Kings edged Durban Super Giants at the Wanderers on Thursday. Richard Gleeson's fine bowling in the Super Over secured the win, lifting Super Kings to the top of the points table with their third victory.
The match swung throughout the 40 overs. Gleeson shifted momentum in the 19th over of the chase, taking two wickets while conceding just four runs. Needing one run off the final ball, Donovan Ferreira ran out Eathan Bosch with a direct hit after Simon Harmer missed the delivery.
Ferreira excelled in all departments: he smashed an unbeaten 33 off just 10 balls, bowled a tight spell of 4 overs for 24 runs and a wicket, and also kept wicket.
Batting first, Super Kings posted 205/4 through a collective effort. Matthew de Villiers and Faf du Plessis set the tone with an 89-run stand off 52 balls. Noor Ahmad claimed three wickets in the middle overs, supported by Simon Harmer, with the spin duo proving difficult to score against.
Wiaan Mulder and Shubham Ranjane tried to rebuild, but the pace was slower than desired. When Mulder fell in the 18th over, the hosts were 156/4. Ferreira's late assault, including four sixes and a boundary, propelled them past 200.
The target seemed challenging as Super Giants started slowly. Devon Conway and Kane Williamson struggled for momentum, and Jos Buttler's brief innings ended in the eighth over, leaving the visitors at 61/3.
While Aiden Markram found boundaries hard to come by, Heinrich Klaasen and Evan Jones accelerated in the middle overs, adding 86 runs in five overs to bring the equation down to 40 needed from the last four.
Gleeson's slower balls and Mulder's wide yorkers contained the chase. Gleeson's penultimate over, conceding only four runs, proved decisive.
Bosch hit the second ball of the final over for six, and with five needed off two, Harmer struck a four off Mulder to tie the match. In the Super Over, Gleeson's variations restricted Buttler and Jones to just six runs.
In reply, Rilee Rossouw edged a boundary off Noor Ahmad to start the chase and sealed the win two balls later with another boundary through extra cover.
