Joel Davies, Hayden Kerr help Sixers clinch low-scoring thriller

Joel Davies and Hayden Kerr helped Sydney Sixers clinch a low-scoring thriller against Brisbane Heat. The Heat, on the verge of a unique BBL double this season, couldn't break the eighth-wicket partnership despite reducing the Sixers to 56/7 in a chase of 114. Davies and Kerr stemmed the flow of wickets to turn the game around, getting the Sixers over the line in the penultimate over.

Defending 114, the Heat had early momentum as Babar Azam and Josh Philippe fell off successive deliveries. Xavier Bartlett removed Daniel Hughes, and Matthew Kuhnemann then struck twice in two balls, followed by Moises Henriques' dismissal. From 47/3, the Sixers collapsed to 56/7, seemingly down and out.

However, with dew setting in, Davies and Kerr withstood the pressure. Davies provided release with a six and a four in a Jack Wildermuth over. Against Matt Renshaw's off-spin, the pair rotated strike comfortably with a low required rate. Saving the power surge for the end, they needed 12 off 12 balls. Davies smashed a boundary through extra cover, and Kerr sealed the win with a six over deep midwicket.

Earlier, Kerr and Davies contributed with the ball on a two-paced surface where the Heat struggled. After Wildermuth hit two sixes, Jack Edwards dismissed his opening partner in the same over. Wildermuth then lost his stumps to a Sean Abbott delivery that kept low, and Kerr removed Renshaw.

Max Bryant, the Heat's hero from a previous thrilling chase, failed to make an impact. At 50/5, the Heat had little hope. Hugh Weigben added vital runs, but Davies took two wickets in an over to reduce them to 74/8. The last-wicket pair added 25 crucial runs, batting out the innings to reach 114—an effort that nearly sufficed.

Brief scores: Brisbane Heat 114/9 in 20 overs (Jack Wildermuth 31; Joel Davies 2/19, Sean Abbott 2/25) lost to Sydney Sixers 118/7 in 18.4 overs (Joel Davies 35*, Hayden Kerr 27*; Matthew Kuhnemann 2/14) by 3 wickets.
