Head, Smith tons put Australia firmly in command at SCG
Centuries by Travis Head (163) and Steven Smith (129*) ensured Australia took control of the Sydney Test on Day 3. The hosts scored 352 runs across the day, taking a lead of 134 by stumps, finishing at 518 for 7.
Resuming on 91, Head brought up his third century of the series early in the day. He was given a life on 96 when Will Jacks dropped a straightforward catch at deep mid-wicket off Brydon Carse. Head capitalized, crossing 150 before being trapped LBW by Jacob Bethell for 163.
Steven Smith built his innings steadily, surviving a dropped chance by Zak Crawley at gully. He accelerated after Tea, reaching his 37th Test century—his 13th in the Ashes—moving past Rahul Dravid on the all-time list. Smith shared an unbroken 81-run stand with Beau Webster (42*).
England’s bowling struggled, with Matthew Potts and Carse leaking boundaries. Carse was the pick, taking 3-108, including the wicket of nightwatch Michael Neser and Usman Khawaja LBW. England burned both reviews early in the day.
Brief Scores: Australia 518/7 (Head 163, Smith 129*; Carse 3-108) lead England 384 by 134 runs.
