Tilak Varma's surgery 'nothing serious', says Hyderabad coach
Hyderabad coach DB Ravi Teja has dismissed concerns over Tilak Varma's fitness, confirming the India T20 batter will be ready for international action soon. Speculation had emerged that Varma could be in danger of missing the upcoming T20 World Cup.
Varma underwent minor surgery for testicular torsion in Rajkot on Wednesday after sustaining an injury during Hyderabad's match against Bengal. Ravi Teja described the procedure as "very minor" and stated, "There is nothing serious or alarming about it. He will be ready in three to four days."
The 23-year-old left-hander is expected to be available for India's five-match T20 series against New Zealand, beginning January 21 in Nagpur. According to his coach, Varma would have been fit to play Hyderabad's Vijay Hazare Trophy match against Jammu & Kashmir on January 8, but the team opted not to risk him as they were already out of knockout contention.
Varma scored 143 runs in two Vijay Hazare Trophy appearances this season, including a century against Chandigarh.
