Tilak Varma doubtful starter for New Zealand T20Is
Tilak Varma's situation is causing concern for Indian selectors, team management, and fans. The Hyderabad batter, who was instrumental in India's Asia Cup victory last year, is recovering in Rajkot, with his availability for the upcoming T20 World Cup in question.
He underwent surgery for Testicular Torsion in Rajkot on Wednesday, exactly one month before the World Cup begins, making his participation uncertain. Hyderabad Cricket Association officials indicate the surgery requires three to four weeks for full recovery, casting doubt on his availability for the five-match T20I series against New Zealand. Selectors are expected to announce a replacement in due course.
Sources close to the player, however, suggest he could recover in about a week. India's first World Cup match is against the USA on February 7 in Mumbai.
Varma was injured while batting for Hyderabad against Bengal in a Vijay Hazare Trophy match on January 6. Batting at No. 3 and leading the side, he scored 34 off 45 deliveries. He reported pain the following day and underwent surgery promptly.
Hyderabad is currently playing against Jammu & Kashmir, with Chama Milind leading the side in Varma's absence.
