Harmanpreet at the fore as MI make it 8-0 against the Giants
Harmanpreet Kaur capitalised on Gujarat Giants' erratic fielding to help Mumbai Indians extend their perfect head-to-head record to 8-0. The Giants, coming off impressive batting displays, posted 192/5 and appeared ahead at points before offering repeated reprieves to the MI skipper, who guided her side to their highest-ever run chase in WPL history.
Batting first, the Giants delivered collectively. MI had an early setback when wicketkeeper G Kamalini dropped a regulation catch off Beth Mooney, who capitalised with boundaries. Shabnim Ismail, however, struck back in her second over as Kamalini held a catch to dismiss Sophie Devine. Kanika Ahuja raced to 15 off 6 before Mooney rounded off the powerplay strongly.
After the timeout, Amelia Kerr removed Mooney, but runs continued to flow. Nearly every Giants batter got a start without converting to a big score. Ashleigh Gardner's cameo ended via Nicola Carey, and Hayley Matthews—in for the unwell Nat Sciver-Brunt—dismissed Ahuja the next over.
Georgia Wareham kept the score ticking, but Ayushi Soni struggled, becoming the first WPL batter to be retired out after scoring 11 off 14. The Giants found a late surge through Bharti Fulmali, who smashed two fours and a six off Carey, then hit two sixes in the final over against Amanjot Kaur to boost momentum.
In reply, the Giants nudged ahead early. G Kamalini was stumped off Renuka Singh Thakur, and Matthews fell for a 12-ball 22. By the powerplay, MI were 48/2, with hopes on skipper Harmanpreet.
Harmanpreet hit her first boundary off Wareham post-timeout, then took a backseat as Amanjot Kaur took centre stage, hitting back-to-back boundaries. The duo attacked Renuka, forcing bowling changes. Harmanpreet smashed Gardner for a six before Devine broke the stand, dismissing Amanjot for 40.
Harmanpreet surged to a half-century, but an over from Renuka changed the chase. Carey, struggling against spin, hit Renuka for four boundaries in an over, with another ball racing to the rope for 20 runs off six deliveries. The Giants compounded errors as Fulmali dropped a chance from Harmanpreet, who then smashed two fours in the same over. Another chance went down in the penultimate over before Harmanpreet sealed the win with four balls left.
Brief scores: Gujarat Giants 192/5 in 20 overs (Georgia Wareham 43*, Bharti Fulmali 36*; Shabnim Ismail 1/25) lost to Mumbai Indians 193/3 in 19.2 overs (Harmanpreet Kaur 71*, Amanjot Kaur 40; Sophie Devine 1/29) by 7 wickets.
