Urgency mounts for MI as they face RCB again

Since Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bengaluru met on the opening night of the season, their trajectories have sharply diverged. RCB have surged forward with five consecutive wins this season, securing a playoff spot and setting a WPL record winning streak. Their momentum has been decisive, with five different players earning Player of the Match awards.

In contrast, MI have managed only two wins despite retaining the core of last year's championship-winning side. Struggles at the top of the order have been central to their issues, with four different opening combinations tried and the slowest-scoring openers in the tournament. This has repeatedly forced Harmanpreet Kaur and Nat Sciver-Brunt into consolidation roles rather than accelerating from strong positions.

With two league games remaining, MI find themselves unexpectedly on the fringes of playoff qualification, though the tightly bunched mid-table keeps their hopes alive for a late surge.

RCB, coming off their first defeat of the campaign, will be alert to MI's potential resurgence. In a long tournament, early momentum secures qualification, but late-season rhythm often decides trophies.

When: January 26, 19:30 IST
Where: BCA Stadium, Kotambi, Vadodara
What to expect: No one-way traffic. Results have been evenly split between teams batting and bowling first, with bowlers remaining competitive in all four games here. RCB's 178 in the opening fixture remains the only score above 160 this season at Kotambi, highlighting the challenge of scoring on its black-soil wickets.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru
Unlikely to tinker with a settled combination despite their first defeat. Arundhati Reddy's return adds experience and balance to their attack.

Probable XI: Grace Harris, Smriti Mandhana (c), Georgia Wareham, Gautami Naik, Richa Ghosh (wk), Nadine de Klerk, Radha Yadav, Arundhati Reddy, Shreyanka Patil, Sayali Satghare, Lauren Bell

Mumbai Indians
Top-order issues and combination muddles came to a head in their previous game, where Amelia Kerr was left out. Regular opener Hayley Matthews has had a lean run, offering little clarity to MI's unresolved problems. Kerr's absence also weakens their bowling, which has been thinned by injuries. There may be a case to revisit her as an opener, despite her struggles against Lauren Bell in the season opener.

Probable XI: Hayley Matthews/Amelia Kerr, Sajeevan Sajana, Nat Sciver-Brunt, Harmanpreet Kaur (c), Rishitha Rajith (wk), Nicola Carey, Amanjot Kaur, Vaishnavi Sharma, Poonam Khemnar, Sanskriti Gupta, Shabnim Ismail

Quote:
"When we lose, a lot of good things go unnoticed. One thing I really liked was that after the six overs, every bowler came in talking about keeping a fielder in and building pressure. Instead of playing it safe, everyone wanted to push for wickets, and I didn't have to tell anyone. That, for me, is a winning mindset." – Smriti Mandhana, after RCB's first defeat of the season.
