CPL to return to Jamaica in 2026 with new franchise
The Caribbean Premier League (CPL) will return to Jamaica in 2026, ending a six-year absence from the island. A media release confirmed that a new Jamaica-based franchise will be introduced, with four matches scheduled at Sabina Park.
CPL matches have not been staged in Jamaica since 2019. The 2026 season marks the competition's first appearance on the island following the relocation and rebranding of the Jamaica Tallawahs to Antigua ahead of the 2024 edition. The agreement follows discussions between the league and the Government of Jamaica.
Pete Russell, CEO of the CPL, welcomed the development: "We are absolutely thrilled to be bringing the CPL back to Jamaica in 2026. Jamaica has a rich cricketing heritage and an unmistakable energy. The return of a Jamaican franchise and matches at Sabina Park is something fans have been calling for."
Olivia Grange, Jamaica's Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, said: "The Government of Jamaica is pleased to welcome the Caribbean Premier League back. This event goes beyond cricket—it supports economic growth, promotes our culture, and inspires our young people."
Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett described the move as part of a strategy to revitalise urban tourism in Kingston. Cricket West Indies president Dr Kishore Shallow stated: "Everyone at Cricket West Indies is delighted to see CPL cricket returning to Jamaica. The island holds a special place in Caribbean cricket. The return of a franchise to Sabina Park is an important moment for the tournament and for cricket across the Caribbean."
Further details, including the identity of the new franchise and squad composition, are expected to be announced in due course.
