Ranaweera claims four as Sri Lanka take early series lead
Half-centuries by Stafanie Taylor and Jannilea Glasgow went in vain as Sri Lanka held their nerves to secure a 10-run win over West Indies in the first One-Day International at the National Cricket Stadium in St. George's, Grenada.
In response to Sri Lanka's 240 for 6, West Indies were bowled out for 230 with two balls remaining. Sri Lanka's innings was built on half-centuries from Hasini Perera (61 off 86) and Harshitha Samarawickrama (66 off 105), who shared an 86-run stand for the second wicket after Chamari Athapaththu fell for 27 in the 11th over.
Vishmi Gunaratne and Dewmi Vihanga provided a late flourish, with Vihanga's 6-ball 14 proving vital.
West Indies struggled to build partnerships, slumping to 55 for 4 by the 16th over. Glasgow joined Taylor in the 23rd over with the hosts at 80 for 5. The pair revived the innings with an 89-run stand for the sixth wicket, both scoring half-centuries to keep West Indies in the chase.
However, Taylor was run out in the 40th over with 72 still needed. Glasgow fell soon after. The lower order fought hard, reducing the equation to 12 needed off the final over with two wickets in hand.
Inoka Ranaweera was the pick of the bowlers with four wickets. Kavisha Dilhari held her nerve in the final over, dismissing Afy Fletcher and Karishma Ramharack in three deliveries to seal a thrilling win.
