IPL matches at Chinnaswamy not a done deal yet

The Government of Karnataka has given approval for IPL matches at Bengaluru's Chinnaswamy Stadium, but the arrangement is not finalized. Discussions are ongoing between Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), and the state government.

A senior KSCA official indicated uncertainty, stating, "You have to speak to RCB." The official added, "The KSCA has government permission to host IPL matches. All necessary works are in progress and will be completed as scheduled."

The KSCA is currently undertaking infrastructure and safety upgrades at the stadium, including widening spectator gates and access points, based on expert committee recommendations. These works are expected to finish by month-end.

However, following the tragic events of June 4, 2025, RCB is seeking unconditional clearance to host matches, rather than conditional approval. The franchise has explored Raipur's Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Cricket Stadium in Chhattisgarh as a potential alternative venue.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has delayed announcing the IPL 2026 schedule, partly due to awaiting Assembly election dates in Assam, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala. The uncertainty surrounding Chinnaswamy Stadium's readiness has further contributed to this delay.

In a related development, Rajasthan Royals have requested indemnity from the state government to host matches at Jaipur's Sawai Mansingh Stadium. The franchise seeks protection from liability for issues beyond its operational control, such as structural or safety failures.

Reports suggest Rajasthan Royals may play four of their seven home games in Jaipur following state government intervention.

The IPL is currently scheduled to begin on March 26.
