Sutherland's all-round brilliance leaves India on brink in Perth

Annabel Sutherland's all-around performance – a fourth Test hundred and 2/14 in the second innings – gave Australia total control of the one-off day-night Test against India in Perth on Day 2. Sutherland made 129, and shared a 128-run stand with Ellyse Perry (76), who became the highest run-getter for her country in Tests, pushing Australia's first innings total to 323 in reply to India's 198. She then picked up two crucial middle-order wickets, one at each end of her miserly five-over spell, leaving India reeling at 105/6 at stumps, still 20 behind.

Australia's overnight pair of Perry and Sutherland resumed without much trouble. Perry raised her half-century with a six off Sneh Rana. Sutherland followed suit shortly after the drinks break. A couple of milestones followed for Perry. She became just the second Australian to 1000 Test runs, and the only one with a double of 30 wickets in the format as well. Upon reaching 75 with a boundary, she then went on to overtake Karen Rolton as the country's highest run-scorer in the format.

Against the run of play, Deepti Sharma got Perry. While the on-field call was not-out, the India allrounder convinced her captain to review and was vindicated. Sutherland, however, pushed Australia into the lead before Beth Mooney raised the team's 200 in the following over. Sutherland notched up her third consecutive Test hundred shortly after the Tea break.

India offered a couple of lifelines to Mooney, but she failed to make the most of it as Rana finally got on the board in her 15th over. At the other end, Kranti Gaud made it a double blow by sending back Ash Gardner for just one. Sutherland departed just after drinks in the second session, with Deepti picking up her second of the innings. Part-timer Shafali Verma too got off the mark, sending back Tahlia McGrath for a 32-ball 13.

The Alana King and Lucy Hamilton pairing for the ninth wicket frustrated India with a 34-run partnership but Sayali Satghare returned with the new ball shortly into the final session and picked up the two remaining wickets in quick succession, keeping Australia's lead to 125. Satghare was the pick of the bowlers, finishing with 4 for 50. However, India's batting fumbled in the final session.

Smriti Mandhana kicked off with a brace to get going in the second innings, but fell on the second ball. Darcie Brown got it to shape back in late and the Indian vice-captain chopped on. Sharing the new ball, Lucy Hamilton had Shafali Verma nicking behind after a run-a-ball five.

Sutherland came into the attack in the eighth over and struck on the last ball. Pratika Rawal opted for a review to have the on-field LBW call reversed, but two deliveries later in the same over, Jemimah Rodrigues' ill-advised attempt at ramp left India three-down on 38. Harmanpreet Kaur too was guilty of a loose shot – poking at a delivery she should have left alone – and edged to second slip to fall for 11 and give Sutherland her second of the day.

Deepti Sharma took 13 balls to get off the mark, displaying patience. However, Hamilton got the better of her in the closing minutes of play. After a short delivery, the pacer got one to nip back in and bowled the left-hander through the gate. Two deliveries later, she had Richa Ghosh nicking behind, leaving India at a precarious 82/6.

Sneh Rana joined hands with Pratika Rawal (43 not out) to see their team through to stumps without any further damage on the day. The pair added 23 runs for the unbroken seventh wicket stand with India struggling to avoid an innings defeat. They're 20 away from ensuring Australia have to bat again.

Brief scores: India 198 & 105/6 (Pratika Rawal 43*; Lucy Hamilton 3-32, Annabel Sutherland 2-15) trail Australia 323 (Annabel Sutherland 129, Ellyse Perry 76; Sayali Satghare 4-50) by 20 runs.
