All-round Moeen Ali powers Karachi Kings to victory

Karachi Kings began their PSL 2026 campaign with a win, defeating Quetta Gladiators by 14 runs in Lahore on Friday.

Opting to bowl first, Quetta Gladiators had early success as Muhammad Waseem fell for a three-ball duck. David Warner and Salman Agha provided impetus, with Warner hitting four consecutive fours off Alzarri Joseph. Agha followed with three fours in a row off Ahmed Daniyal but was dismissed lbw the next ball.

Warner and Saad Baig continued the aggressive approach, taking Kings past 100 in the 11th over, though the top four were back in the pavilion by then. A middle-order wobble saw Kings slip from 87/2 to 109/5.

Moeen Ali orchestrated the recovery. After a slow start, he targeted Tom Curran, breaking a 26-ball boundary drought for Kings. He accelerated brilliantly, hitting a six and a four off Usman Tariq to push the total past 150 in the 18th over. He finished unbeaten on 48 off 29 balls, including a six off Alzarri Joseph and two fours in the final over, guiding Kings to 181/7.

In reply, Quetta's openers Saud Shakeel and Shamyl Hussain launched a fierce assault, racing to 75/0 by the end of the Powerplay. Hussain, on PSL debut, reached a 21-ball fifty. The momentum shifted when Adam Zampa entered the attack. Salman Agha dismissed Hussain caught in the deep, and Zampa bowled Khawaja Nafay with a googly.

The partnership between Rilee Rossouw and Shakeel was stifled by Kings' spinners, managing only 41 runs between overs 8-15. Shakeel fell to Moeen Ali. Hasan Ali then bowled Rossouw, further denting the chase.

With 56 needed from four overs, Hasan Nawaz struggled at 10 off 18 balls. A few boundaries kept hopes alive, but the required rate climbed sharply. Ben McDermott hit back-to-back fours off Mir Hamza, but Hasan Ali sealed the game by taking three wickets in the 19th over, dismissing Nawaz, Tom Curran, and another batter.

Needing 30 off the final over, McDermott's late six and four only reduced the margin of defeat.

Post-match comments:

  • Saud Shakeel (Quetta Gladiators captain) identified his own dismissal as the turning point, stating he should have batted deeper.
  • Moeen Ali (Player of the Match) on his innings: "I'm pretty calm; I know when I need to go… It was different, he's a world-class spinner (on Usman Tariq), breaks your rhythm and I just delayed my shots (against him)."

Brief scores:
Karachi Kings 181/7 in 20 overs (Moeen Ali 48*, David Warner 35; Ahmed Daniyal 3-36, Alzarri Joseph 2-32) beat Quetta Gladiators 167/7 in 20 overs (Shamyl Hussain 52, Saud Shakeel 33; Hasan Ali 4-27) by 14 runs.
