Maharashtra government initiates plan for 1 lakh-capacity stadium in Mumbai
The Maharashtra Government has advanced plans to develop a world-class cricket stadium in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). Mumbai Cricket Association president Ajinkya Naik and CIDCO Managing Director Vijay Singhal have held detailed discussions to chart the roadmap for this project, which originates from State Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
The proposed stadium is planned to seat 100,000 spectators, positioning it among the largest cricket venues globally. It is envisioned as a state-of-the-art facility aimed at setting new benchmarks in sporting infrastructure and fan experience.
MCA president Naik stated, "This initiative marks a defining moment for Maharashtra's sporting ecosystem. A 1 lakh-capacity stadium in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region will not only elevate Mumbai cricket but also firmly position Maharashtra on the global sporting map."
The project is expected to boost sports tourism, attract major international events, and enhance the region's global sporting profile. It aligns with broader goals to nurture talent and strengthen grassroots cricket.
Currently, Mumbai has three international stadiums—Wankhede Stadium, Brabourne Stadium, and DY Patil Stadium—but none have a capacity this large.
