Gary Stead to Step Aside as New Zealand's Coach
New Zealand head coach Gary Stead will step down from his role after seven years, concluding his contract later this month. NZC announced the news in a statement on Wednesday (June 4).
Stead, who previously confirmed his departure as New Zealand's white-ball coach, was not considered for an extension in red-ball cricket. NZC has opted for a single head coach across all formats.
Stead is considered New Zealand's most successful coach, leading the team to:
- The inaugural ICC World Test Championship win in 2021
- A historic 3-0 Test series victory over India in India
- Five final appearances in ICC white-ball World Cups
Under his leadership, New Zealand reached the top of the ICC Test and ODI rankings.
"There have been some amazing memories over the past seven years," said the 53-year-old Stead. "I've tried to build and shape the team's style of play, focusing on consistency across all formats. It's been rewarding to be competitive in all three formats and I believe the opposition knows the Black Caps are a team that won't give up."
Stead highlighted the WTC win and the recent Test success in India as the most memorable moments of his tenure.
"Working alongside some of New Zealand's best cricketers has been an honour," he added. "For a country with limited resources, we have performed exceptionally well against the world's top teams. I am grateful to everyone who has supported me, especially my wife Rachel and children Alex and Libby."
Captain Kane Williamson praised Stead's dedication to the team. "Steady gave everything to the team," Williamson said. "He was hardworking and passionate about the Black Caps' success. He was thorough in his planning and preparation and will be remembered as one of our best coaches, but more importantly, a great person."
