South Africa's Shukri Conrad: A World Champion's Perspective

"With two runs to go I remember the old man saying to me, 'I just want to see you beat Australia one day.'"

Dickie Conrad, Shukri's father and a man of cricket, passed away last year. Ashwell Prince, South Africa's batting coach, also experienced loss recently, with his wife Melissa passing away in December.

"It's not something we reference in a team chat or in a huddle, but the guys naturally would reach out to either me or Ash with a gesture of some sort," Conrad said. "These things happen organically."

Conrad acknowledged the emotional toll of the victory, saying, "It was probably the two worst hours of cricket for me but the two best at the same time. I was living every emotion; sketching everything that could go wrong. The mind plays weird and wonderful games."

Despite being considered underdogs, South Africa triumphed over Australia, a team many experts deemed superior.

"Arguably the best side in the world? Yeah, we've just beaten them," Conrad stated confidently.

He addressed the criticism surrounding South Africa's qualification for the final, saying, "We're the world champions. We create our own reality. We played one of the big three now, and we beat them."

Conrad emphasized the importance of every player stepping up, highlighting Wiaan Mulder's crucial 27 runs and Lungi Ngidi's key wickets.

"KG was buggered, so someone had to bowl," Conrad said. "And it had to be Lungi. It was a case of Lungs, now's the time. You need to step up here, we need you. And he delivered. This has been the great thing about this team – someone always steps up."

The victory resonated deeply with the South African nation.

"This means a hell of a lot for the country," Conrad said.
