Shreyas Iyer in focus for India A side
Shreyas Iyer recently found himself in the spotlight, though not necessarily for his own doing. He was left out of the Asia Cup squad, despite his impressive form, leading to nationwide debate. However, an opportunity may be on the horizon with the Australian team touring India.
The selectors will likely focus on Iyer's role in the India A team facing Australia A. He is expected to play a prominent role, potentially as captain. The Australians will be in India next week for two four-day red-ball matches followed by three white-ball matches.
Iyer is currently representing West Zone in the Duleep Trophy against Central Zone. While his first innings performance was modest (25 runs), it is unlikely to affect his selection for the red-ball matches, if not the white-ball matches.
Iyer's strong performance in the IPL, coupled with his potential red-ball role, suggests he will be considered for future matches, including the home Test series against West Indies in October and subsequent away red-ball series in Australia.
Apart from Iyer, top performers from the ongoing Duleep Trophy, including Nitish Reddy, A Easwaran, and Sai Sudharsan, may be considered for selection. Other players like N Jagadeesan, Ruturaj Gaikwad, and Rajat Patidar are also potential candidates.
The first four-day match between India A and Australia A starts in Lucknow on September 16, a day after the Duleep Trophy final concludes on September 11. Selections are likely to be made a few days after the ongoing semifinals, which end on September 7. The second red-ball game is from September 23 to 26, also in Lucknow, followed by three white-ball matches on September 30, October 3, and October 5, all in Kanpur.
