South Africa chip away after enforcing follow-on

Chattogram, Bangladesh

South Africa won the first hour after lunch on the third day of the second Test against Bangladesh, wrapping up the hosts' first innings with minimal addition to the total.

Mominul Haque (82) was unable to reach a deserved century, but his 103-run partnership with Taijul Islam kept Bangladesh's prospects from sinking.

Following a first-innings lead of 416, enforcing the follow-on became a straightforward decision, and Bangladesh continued to crumble with the bat, ending the session at 43/4.

The loss of wickets was not solely due to the new-ball skills of Kagiso Rabada, as Dane Paterson and Senuran Muthusamy claimed vital wickets.

Paterson struck in his first over to dismiss Shadman Islam, followed by Muthusamy who claimed two of the next three wickets, including Mahmudul Hasan Joy and Zakir Hasan.

Keshav Maharaj then joined the fray, dismissing Mominul for a duck and breaking the Mominul-Taijul partnership, while Muthusamy struck again to get rid of Taijul.

The writing appears to be on the wall for Bangladesh with a massive deficit of 373 and six wickets remaining in the first innings from two full days left in the game.

Series Status

  • South Africa: 575/6 decl (Tony de Zorzi 177, Tristan Stubbs 106, Wiaan Mulder 105; Taijul Islam 5-198)
  • Bangladesh: 159 and 43/4 (Senuran Muthusamy 2-10)
  • South Africa lead Bangladesh by 373 runs.
