Bell stars as England register comprehensive win in one-off Test

England registered a comprehensive 286-run win in the one-off Test at the Mangaung Oval, handing South Africa a crushing defeat.

England resumed the day on 31 for 1, but Tammy Beaumont was trapped legbefore by Tumi Sekukhune in the sixth over. Heather Knight carried the charge strongly, striking consecutive boundaries off Annerie Dercksen and Nat Sciver-Brunt taking the attack to Nonkululeku Mlaba, hitting her for boundaries through deep mid wicket, long on and through extra cover.

However, Mlaba managed to clean up Sciver-Brunt soon after, for 37. Danni Wyatt-Hodge carried on the attack and smoked four boundaries in her brief stay of run-a-ball 23 before getting caught by Anne Bosch.

Knight continued to keep England steady and took the hosts past Lunch without any further damage even as Amy Jones sped away to run-a-ball 21. However, soon after Lunch, Mlaba ripped through the lower order while they attempted to play the big shots. The spinner returned six wickets, including that of Knight, who was trapped legbefore on 90.

South Africa were pegged back early in the chase with Laura Wolvaardt getting trapped legbefore on 4 by Lauren Bell. The pacer then ran through the top order, trapping Anne Bosch for the same score in the same fashion. Dercksen made a positive start, but were also sent back to the pavilion in the successive overs of Bell, soon after she cleaned up Sune Luus.

The visitors failed to pick themselves up from that point. Marizanne Kapp struck a couple of boundaries before getting caught by Beaumont. Nadine de Klerk was run out in the next over and Chloe Tryon was pinged on the pads by Sophie Ecclestone two overs later. Bell continued her destruction trapping Sinola Jafta and running out Mlaba.

Brief scores:

  • England: 395/9 decl (Nat Sciver-Brunt 128; Nonkululeko Mlaba 4-90) & 236 (Heather Knight 90; Nonkululeko Mlaba 6-67)
  • South Africa: 281 (Laura Wolvaardt 65; Lauren Bell 4-49) & 64 (Marizanne Kapp 21; Lauren Bell 4-27)
