Australia bowled out for 414; Jayasuriya picks five

Sri Lanka's spinners ensured a damage-control session on the third morning of the second Test against Australia in Galle. Prabath Jayasuriya (5-151) toiled to a fifer while Nishan Peiris (3-94) and Ramesh Mendis (2-81) also did the hard yards to keep Sri Lanka's fight going but Australia continue to be in charge of the game. Resuming at 330/3, they were bowled out for 414 with a strong first-innings lead of 157.

The day began with Smith and Carey threatening to further swell Australia's position in the game but the partnership was broken in the first hour. Jayasuriya broke the 259-run stand when he had Smith nicking off to a cracking delivery that spun just a bit to find the edge through to the keeper. The left-arm spinner struck again in the same over when Josh Inglis misjudged the length of an arm-ball and got cleaned up. Jayasuriya's accuracy got rewarded further when he ended Carey's resistance as Sri Lanka chipped away at the wickets.

Peiris then took out debutant Cooper Connolly who fell to a rash slog-sweep as Australia tried to add quick runs. A deserving fifer came for Jayasuriya when Mitchell Starc missed a wild slog sweep to be castled. Mendis then polished off the final two Australian wickets by the stroke of lunch. Beau Webster added some handy runs down the order and it helped Australia to cross the 400-run mark.

The wicket is starting to deteriorate steadily and it means that the lead of 157 is a lot bigger advantage effectively for the visitors.

Brief scores: Sri Lanka 257 (Kusal Mendis 85*, Dinesh Chandimal 74; Mitchell Starc 3-37, Matthew Kuhnemann 3-63) trail Australia 414 (Alex Carey 156, Steve Smith 131; Prabath Jayasuriya 5-151) by 157 runs
