Shardul Thakur Shines for LSG in Crucial Match
Shardul Thakur was not meant to spend the summer of 2025 playing franchise cricket, but a phone call from Zaheer Khan changed his plans. LSG were in a desperate situation due to mass injuries and needed an experienced bowler. Shardul, who was initially unfancied, was the perfect replacement.
The Impact Player Rule
The impact player rule has been a challenge for multi-faceted players like Shardul. His economy rate inflated in recent seasons, and he was not picked by any franchise in the mega auction. However, Shardul remains an unflappable asset, with 83 international matches and 35 wickets in 9 games in his recent red-ball assignment.
Shardul's Performance
Shardul took the field in Hyderabad and quickly turned the narrative around. He finished with figures of 4-34, becoming the first bowler this season to concede less than six runs in a single over to SRH. He also became the first bowler to take wickets off seemingly innocuous deliveries, perfectly capable of being dispatched for runs.
Shardul's Philosophy
Shardul's approach to bowling is simple: "I think they are coming hard at bowlers so why not bowlers go hard at them? So the talk was around what the plan should be and we collectively said let's go hard at them, let's take our chances." He took chances with an outside the off-stump line and an off-cutter, giving him two more wickets at the death and SRH a sub-200 total.
LSG's Victory
The quick, authoritative chase for the first points of the season was followed by a beaming Sanjeev Goenka engulfing Rishabh Pant in a warm embrace, perhaps erasing the memories of the wretched night of flared tempers and raised voices on this very turf last May.
