Duffy fifer helps NZ wrap up 1-0 lead in Wellington

After a spirited batting effort to draw the first Test, West Indies produced a contrasting performance at Basin Reserve, losing by nine wickets on the third day. Jacob Duffy starred for New Zealand with his second five-wicket haul in Tests as West Indies were bowled out for 128. Needing only 56 to win, the hosts completed the chase in 10 overs to take a 1-0 series lead.

West Indies, resuming at 32/2, made steady progress as Brandon King and Kavem Hodge pushed the score to 50. However, a mix-up resulted in King's run-out, and in the same over, Shai Hope fell to a Michael Rae caught-and-bowled. Hodge continued to find boundaries, but Duffy had Roston Chase caught behind. West Indies took a lead at 74/5, but slipped to 88/6 when Zakary Foulkes dismissed Hodge attempting a pull.

Justin Greaves and Tevin Imlach guided West Indies to Lunch without further loss, but Greaves fell to Duffy early in the second session. Duffy struck again in his next over to remove Imlach, caught at second slip. The innings ended quickly: Rae had Jayden Seales caught at slip, and Ojay Shields top-edged a short ball to give Duffy his five-wicket haul.

Devon Conway started New Zealand's small chase with two fours off Seales in the second over. Tom Latham, after a watchful start, hit a boundary off Kemar Roach but then edged Anderson Phillip to third slip. Conway and Kane Williamson then accelerated to finish the match. Conway hit three fours in Shields' over, and Williamson struck three boundaries in Phillip's over as New Zealand reached the target in the 10th over.

New Zealand's win was set up earlier by Blair Tickner, who took four wickets in the first innings to bowl West Indies out for 205, though he was ruled out of the Test after dislocating his shoulder while saving a boundary. Conway and Mitchell Hay then scored sixties to secure a 73-run lead, followed by a clinical bowling performance in the second innings to complete a dominant victory.

Brief scores:
West Indies 205 (Shai Hope 47; Blair Tickner 4-32, Michael Rae 3-66) & 128 (Kavem Hodge 35; Jacob Duffy 5-38, Michael Rae 3-45)
New Zealand 278 (Mitchell Hay 61, Devon Conway 60; Anderson Phillip 3-70) & 57/1 (Devon Conway 28*, Kane Williamson 16*)
New Zealand won by 9 wickets.
